For Cosplay, Master the Character — Not Just the Costume

For Cosplay, Master the Character — Not Just the Costume

Cosplay is a booming industry that has exploded with creativity with the expansion of the internet. Online geeks are becoming more connected and are all sharing their love for fictional characters — so with porn being one of the most popular things on the net, it’s no surprise cosplay and porn are now heavily intertwined. Cosplay can be cheap or expensive, but the most important part is to love the character you’re adopting and have fun.

If you’re looking to get into cosplay, there are a few ways you could go about it, depending on your budget. You could have someone make your custom outfits, you could buy cheap outfits online or you could make them yourself. The great thing about creative work is you can do it however you like, but staying true to the character will always bring in more views.

Knowing a character well, from their facial expressions to the little sounds they make, is paramount to attracting fans of the show, movie or game.

When creating cosplay content, you should take a few things into consideration. Is there a story? Is it accurate to the character? Do your mannerisms match the character? Knowing a character well, from their facial expressions to the little sounds they make, is paramount to attracting fans of the show, movie or game. Your cosplay outfit doesn’t have to be 100 percent accurate; while it does help, it isn’t the most important thing. It’s all about enjoying yourself and really putting yourself into the role.

There are hundreds of thousands of people profiting off this work, and so I will be honest and say you should really focus on the quality of the content you put out there if you want to make a profit off of it. When you’re ready to start investing in it, focus on good lighting and phones for photos. Get your own tripod and set timers on photos so you don’t have to hire a photographer. As for videos, a clean white background to help the light bounce will improve the quality, even without a DSLR camera.

When I do my videos or photos, I wear heavier makeup than normal and it smooths out my skin and makes my eyes pop so I don’t have to Photoshop it. Truth be told, I don’t even know how to use Photoshop, so I let the makeup do the work for me. For videos, I also recommend using Wondershare Filmora. It is $60 flat and then you have editing software for videos with filters and you can play with the color balance to make colors pop. I personally like to increase the blue in my videos and pictures because it makes the image appear sharper and cleaner. Blue is soothing to the eyes and is very appealing with white.

If you know how to use Photoshop, then you are already ahead of the game. You can easily create the fantasy you want to create. Cosplay has a lot to do with escapism and the imaginary world, so make it a fantasy, make it believable, make it fun, make it a place for your viewers to step into another world and feel different for a while. It can be truly beautiful and really rewarding when you get to live out your own dreams behind the screen and share it with the world. Work smart and have fun!
